If you’re thinking about working with a spiritual healer to support your personal development, you’ll want to engage someone you feel comfortable to share your thoughts and feelings with. Thanks to the internet, it’s easier to find expert guidance than ever – and most spiritual folk operate via distance, so you’re not restricted to those in your area. So how do you find the right person?
First, do your research – check out the healer’s social media channels, blog posts and videos, and notice whether you’re picking up what they’re putting down. Your intuition will tell you whether they’re in alignment with your needs – however it’s important not to leave your brain out of the process entirely. Here are a few factors I recommend you think about when choosing a healer to work with.
And before you read any further, you should know that I am an energy healer, so I have an obvious bias on this subject. My advice might not be right for you, so – again – ultimately you must go with your gut.
Are they professional?
Even though spiritual work is often intangible, there are a lot of very practical aspects involved. A healer who has created a good structure for their practice, and communicates that clearly – without wishy-washy messaging – will be well placed to support your healing journey.
Here are some indications that a healer probably operates in a professional manner:
They state their fees when requested and explain how and when payment is required.
They likely have a cancellation policy.
They are insured.
They may belong to a professional association.
Do they seem grounded?
A healer can have a wonderful connection to the spirit world but if they’re not well grounded, they may not interpret those messages in a way that’s relevant to everyday people. A healer who is well grounded will be able to anchor the information they channel from spirit into a form that is meaningful and helpful to you. Being grounded is about being down to earth and not disconnected from reality.
You can’t tell whether someone is grounded by looking at their photo, but looking at their posts, articles and videos will give you a fairly good indication. Think: do they use excessive amounts of airy-fairy language or do they explain spiritual concepts and terminology in a way you can easily understand? Do their words reflect the reality and complexity of being human, or do they tend to spout clichés and oversimplifications (eg ‘just put on a smile and everything will be wonderful!’)? If you don’t understand what they’re saying, or it simply doesn’t resonate with you, they might be a wonderful healer for someone else but probably not for you.
Are they doing their own self-development work?
As a healer I can tell you that this type of work brings up a lot of my own emotional issues and energetic blocks, and if I’m not actively working through these with a healer of my own, I simply will not have the capacity to support my clients with their development. It’s a good idea to ask a healer what spiritual and personal development work they are engaging with on a regular basis. A good healer will understand that growth is an ongoing process, not a destination.
Do they manage your expectations?
Be aware of your expectations when you engage in spiritual services. A healer’s job is to shine a light on what you need to understand in order to move forward, and shift energy in that direction. A healer can assist you with enormous transformation and growth – personally, I’ve experienced remarkable changes since working with a spiritual coach. It’s important to know, however, that they cannot ‘fix’ you and they cannot work miracles. Make sure your healer is not overpromising beyond their capabilities – a healer on a pedestal is often a prelude to disappointment.
Do they feel right?
If someone doesn’t feel like the right fit for you, don’t work with them. Your best friend might be super passionate about a particular healer, but that doesn’t mean they’re the right one to guide you in your life’s journey. The healer’s social media messages and website will give you a feel for who they are – your intuition will guide you on who is best in alignment with your needs and wishes.
